We all have seen big start-ups go down even the successful brands go down the lane when starting up in new countries, no? Wondering why?

Well to be real, there could be a lot of things contributing to that matter, but one of the biggest things is how they market and brand themselves.

To be precise, branding is making an image, feel, or persona of your brand which is built by our trending interests and genre.

So, when it comes to strategizing how to do branding, we must remember the potential of trends among the millennials or let’s admit; interest in Gen-z and its potential in terms of marketing

According to data from Forbes – 55% of 13-35-year-olds send memes every week—and 30% send them every day. In addition to this As Mittal states “Our researchers observed over 10 million meme interactions across a variety of topics, interests and user demographics. We estimated that an average millennial looks at 20-30 memes every day.”

Well, what’s a meme?

Richard Dawkins coined the word “meme” in 1976. He defines it as an idea or notion that is passed on by imitation, Memes are a type of idea, behavior, or style that spreads from person to person within a culture, which is exactly how memes work these days so hence meme is something new it has been there all along just the use of it became common in recent times.

What is meme marketing?

To be honest, we all know that no one wants to see product-based content or see selling posts of services and products but yeah if you engage with them post stuff that initiates a good thought in their daily lives then yes, of course, they would love that.

Meme marketing is the basic concept of relating your brand/product/service with certain memes that people or your audience can relate to. Meme marketing gives you a touchpoint where you and customers interact and initiate them to keep you in the link. To be honest even for me as a young individual, I would never want to be spammed with tons of brand posts but yeah if I come across some funny meme that I can personally relate I might not buy the product but I will have a good laugh and I might remember the brand. So hence it increases the visibility and value of content.

What does the data say?

When we look at data it completely says that meme pages have more influence and max amount of followers compared to even Instagram influencers.

Pages like @fuckjerry with 16.5M and @pubity with 31.5M followers post trending vines and memes, giving them the edge to be liked more because those contents are relatable to all.

According to Ypulse – 38% follow meme accounts on social media which means that’s where the best potential lies when it comes to setting a presence on social media. Just like currently memes shifted from basic characters on plain backgrounds to screenshots of comments, tweets, and google search trends, most of the meme pages use movie and show scenes to make it more relatable and sarcastic content. Seeing such rapid growth and shift of people’s interests, behaviors, and openness towards meme-based content a lot of brands shifted to meme marketing like Netflix, Zomato, Mcdonalds, etc

Experimenting with the theory and data

We experimented to have a holistic view on this approach of meme marketing with our amazing client Shugah in which we posted two types of content, one meme-based content and the second brand-based/engagement-based content in 2 months. What did we see? 32.68% higher impressions, 312.65% more people reached, and 221.87% higher engagement on average as compared to other engagement or brand-based pieces of content. Given the fact that all the posts in question were advertised with the same budget, in a similar period of time, and with the same audience, it clearly shows that meme-based content had significantly higher results.

Now the question arises of how you can use it for your brand, what are the ways you can make your product or brand page relatable and less product selling without making it look like a meme page itself?!

Analyze the age, gender, and interests of your customers then segment them into categories and make a persona related to them, use those personas to create content they can relate to. This adds character and influence to your brand in customers’ personal life.

  1. Personalize the memes with your brand

The best way to trend is to use already trending memes and link them to your products or service, browse top trending memes and make them related to your brand and service linking it to your audience’s interests and your products.

Other than this you can even create your memes adding sarcasm to realistic scenarios your audience faces in daily life, so they can relate to your brand.

  1. Be logical and direct

Create memes with minimal text and more sarcasm, be direct on what you want your audience to perceive, keep the text and designs attractive enough to catch the eye of the audience. So that you don’t look like you’re trying too hard to be in this.

Make sure to use the current period trending memes or topics when creating memes, use the right time when your audience is active so you get a better response, and make sure your targeting is on point.
